It all started with some cards.

When I first prepared to write Alice and the Pale Horse, I knew I wanted to incorporate the Rider-Waite tarot. So I pulled every card I liked and put them into groups- heroes, villains, unaligned and so forth.

For my heroes, I added oracle cards to describe their powers. Although many things would change after these initial groups, many of the foundational choices held through to the final drafts.
